  • Don't come to Cinque Terre in the summer!

    What Stevens should be telling you he doesn't. This so-called "National Park" is a tourist trap of the worst order. Staying in Manarola, which was a quaint village perched over the Ligurian Sea, for five nights, it soon became evident that all able bodied locals have fled the invasion of tourist hordes that stream in from morning to night. Expect to be gouged for low quality food, wine and accommodation (not to forget the expensive but derelict trains). Despite (or because of) the taxes collected from this tourist carnage, the government shamelessly encourages yet more tourists to throng into the villages whilst failing to provide them the most basic infrastructure like litter bins, street cleaning and public facilities. Therefore, expect lines of tourists at cafés clutching one euro coins to use the WC. Buying this book cannot enhance your stay. It is better to stay away.
